email to apartmenttherapy.com.....
Hi,
I've been an avid visitor for quite a while, and have always felt the contents to be great.
I'm writing on this occasion due to a serious debacle many tenants of the bldg have with the super of my building.
Namely, since two weeks ago, the super became increasingly mentally agitated (she may have gone off her meds) and have caused distress in a number of tenants - myself included. In fact, I live right across the hall from her so I have a better sense of her afflictions than anyone else in my building. She's done everything from graffiti commercials stores nearby, to vandalising the actual apt building, to illegal entering (no breaking, since she's the super and hence has the keys), to larceny (where she's taken a # of items from various tenants while she was inside their apartments).
My question to AT is... what should I do in NYC to fire the super? Some friends suggested the approach of contacting the management with a 'stop rent payment until recourse completed', others say resolve this matter at the Housing Court downtown (which might take 3 mos).
I have spoken to many tenants and we all agree on her removal. We have also spoken to the management/owner of the building who has asked us to be patient... I've even called the cops who agree that she's mentally ill...
Question is, how do I expedite this matter? Our lives at in danger here.
Much thanks for any advice in this unusual case...
